Chord reharmonization: how to transform a progression without losing the song

Reharmonizing means finding new paths for a melody. It is not just swapping simple chords for bigger symbols — it is consciously modifying the relationship between melody, bass, harmonic functions, tension and rest, the rhythm of the changes, style and the physical possibilities of the instrument.

A progression such as:

C – G – Am – F

can become:

C7M – G/B – Am7 – F7M

or:

C7M – Bm7(b5) E7(b9) – Am7 – Gm7 C7 – F7M

or even:

C7M – Eb7M – Ab7M – G7sus4

The three versions start from a similar idea but produce completely different behaviors. The first merely enriches and leads the chords better. The second adds tonicizations and functional movement. The third profoundly changes the color and brings the progression closer to a modal or cinematic language.

The modern Berklee approach treats reharmonization as an intervention on the complete harmonic form: the musician decides how much to preserve, how much to intensify and how much to change, and can rebuild bass lines, shift cadences, increase or decrease harmonic activity and move between tonal and modal systems.

This guide presents a complete method for applying these principles on all four instruments.

What really changes in a reharmonization

It helps to separate four procedures that are often confused.

Enrichment

The chord keeps its position and its function but receives new notes.

C → C7M → C7M(9) → C6/9

The sonority changes, but the harmonic path stays almost the same.

Change of voicing

The notes of the chord are rearranged.

C7M: C – E – G – BC7M/E: E – G – B – C

The basic chord symbol is still C7M, but the new arrangement can improve the bass, highlight the melody or make the connection to the next chord easier.

Substitution

One chord is swapped for another that shares its function or part of its structure.

C7M → Am7F7M → Dm7G7 → Bm7(b5)

Simple substitution seeks to preserve the function. It is like changing the shade of a color without completely altering the image. Dividing the diatonic chords into tonic, subdominant and dominant families is one of the foundations of this procedure.

Structural reharmonization

The complete path is rebuilt.

Original:

Before swapping chords, find out what needs to stay

A reharmonization does not have to preserve everything. However, it must consciously preserve or transform the elements that give the song its identity. Those elements are usually:

A song can remain recognizable with almost all of its harmony changed, as long as its melody and its structural points stay clear. The opposite can also happen: swapping just two chords can completely alter the character of a passage when those chords support decisive notes of the melody.

The melody is the first filter

Consider a melody sustaining the note E. That note can play very different roles:

In C7M, the E defines the major quality. In F7M, it creates an expressive major seventh. In Dm9, it works as an open extension. In Db7(#9), it becomes an intense tension.

So the question should not just be "does the chord contain the melody note?". The more useful questions are:

Does every melodic note have to belong to the chord?

No. A note can work as:

In certain rock and pop repertoires, the melody can retain relative independence from the accompaniment. The analytical literature describes this behavior as a partial separation between the melodic and harmonic layers.

This does not mean that any chord works. It means the analysis must consider duration, accent, register and resolution, and not just a vertical snapshot of the notes.

The reharmonization suggestions help you compare functions, techniques, scale degrees and voice-leading distances, but the tool does not automatically know the specific melody of the song you typed. That is why each suggestion should be heard together with the melody: the app helps you find and understand possibilities; the musical decision still belongs to the ear.

The three pillars of a convincing reharmonization

1. Harmonic function

In a tonal context, chords can be grouped into three broad regions.

Tonic — produces stability or prolongation. In C major:

C7M Em7 Am7

Predominant or subdominant — prepares the move to the dominant.

Dm7 F7M

Dominant — produces tension and a tendency to resolve.

G7 Bm7(b5) B°7

A conservative substitution keeps the function:

F7M → Dm7

A more transformative substitution changes the function:

F7M → B7(b9)

The first case stays in the predominant area. The second creates a dominant that points to Em. It is important to remember that function is not an isolated property of the chord symbol. It depends on the previous chord, the following chord, the bass, the metric position, the melody, the form and the style.

2. Voice leading

Voice leading is the way each note of a chord moves toward the following chord. Consider:

C7M → Am7

Notes:

C7M: C E G BAm7: A C E G

Three notes are common (C E G). Only the B has to move down to A.

This closeness helps explain why C7M and Am7 can substitute for each other or prolong the same harmonic region. The smoothest voice leading usually keeps common notes and moves the others by a semitone or a whole tone. On the fretboard, the Berklee guidance is to look for connections in which the voices stay put or make small moves, instead of simply swapping one distant shape for another.

Example in ii–V–I:

Dm7 → G7 → C7M

Guide tones:

Dm7: F – CG7: F – BC7M: E – B

Movement: C → B, F stays; F → E, B stays. The third and the seventh reveal much of the functional behavior.

3. Bass movement

The bass can completely change how the sequence is perceived.

Original: C – G – Am – FInversion: C – G/B – Am – FBass: C – B – A – F

Expanded version:

C – G/B – Am – Am/G – F – C/E – Dm7 – G7Bass: C – B – A – G – F – E – D – G

The basic progression is still recognizable, but the new bass creates a phrase of its own.

A safe method for reharmonizing any sequence

  1. Record the original version — chords, key, melody, bass, meter, tempo, form and style. Do not try to reharmonize by looking at just four chord symbols out of context.
  2. Reduce the harmony — temporarily strip away extensions and ornaments. C7M(9) – G13/B – Am11 – F7M(#11) becomes C – G – Am – F. Reduction reveals the structure behind the colors.
  3. Mark the important notes of the melody — long, accented, higher, repeated notes, notes that coincide with changes or fall at the ends of phrases.
  4. Identify the arrival points — the start and end of a verse, the entrance of the chorus, the climax, the final cadence, the chord that supports the key word. They can stay stable while the path between them is modified.
  5. Set an intention — make it more intimate, create more movement, darken the passage, surprise, move it toward jazz or MPB, preserve a pop language, create a solo arrangement, make it easier to play or generate contrast before the chorus.
  6. Build the bass — try a diatonic line, a chromatic line, a cycle of fifths, a pedal tone, motion contrary to the melody or a line cliché.
  7. Choose a few technique families — you do not need to use everything at once. One passage can combine inversions, a secondary dominant and modal interchange; another can use a pedal tone, suspended chords and upper structures.
  8. Find playable voicings — shapes that preserve the melody, keep common notes, reduce leaps, respect the register and feel natural on the instrument.
  9. Listen to the new version — play just the bass, just the guide tones, the chords without the melody, the melody with the new harmony and, finally, the version at the real tempo.
  10. Trim the excess — remove chords that go unnoticed, that compete with the melody, that harm the rhythm, that do not contribute to the destination or that only make the chord chart longer.

Reharmonization techniques

1. Quality substitution

The root is kept and the structure receives a new quality.

C → C7MAm → Am7Dm → Dm7G → G7

Example: C – Am – F – G becomes C7M – Am7 – F7M – G7. It is one of the safest ways to start, and it produces greater functional definition and new voice-leading possibilities without significantly changing the sequence.

2. Extensions

Chords can also take on a sixth, a ninth, an eleventh and a thirteenth.

Major: C C6 Cadd9 C7M C7M(9) C6/9 C7M(#11)Minor: Am Am7 Am9 Am11 Am6 Am(7M)Dominant: G7 G9 G13 G7sus4 G7(b9) G7(#9) G7(b13) G7alt

Extensions should be placed mainly in the upper voices. In denser voicings, the perfect fifth can often be omitted without compromising the identity of the chord.

3. Inversions and slash chords

Original C – G – Am – F. With inversions:

C – G/B – Am – F/A

With a more developed line:

C – G/B – Am – Am/G – F – C/E – Dm7 – G7

Inversions are especially useful for creating a bass line, avoiding leaps, keeping a melodic note on top, bringing positions closer together and changing the weight of the chord.

4. Diatonic substitution

Diatonic substitution uses another chord belonging to the key. In C major:

C7M ↔ Em7 ↔ Am7Dm7 ↔ F7MG7 ↔ Bm7(b5)

Original C | C | F | G → reharmonization C7M | Am7 | Dm7 | Bm7(b5) G7.

Substitutions of this kind work because the chords share notes and can occupy similar functional regions. In popular four-chord progressions, swapping IV for ii is a recurring example of functional substitution.

Type C C F G, open the Subtle palette and notice which chords appear as diatonic substitutes. Then open each result in "View positions on the fretboard" and look for a sequence in which the highest note moves as little as possible.

5. Secondary dominant

A secondary dominant temporarily treats another scale degree as a point of arrival. In C major:

Original C – Am – F – G. With dominants:

The E7 contains G sharp, the note that points to A. The C7 contains B flat, which prepares F. The D7 contains F sharp, which prepares G. This process is called tonicization: a chord other than the main tonic temporarily takes on tonic behavior through its dominant.

6. Relative ii–V

Instead of inserting only the dominant, you can add the ii related to the target.

To Am: Bm7(b5) – E7(b9) – AmTo G: Am7 – D7 – GTo F: Gm7 – C7 – F

Example:

C7M | Gm7 C7 | F7M | Am7 D7 | Dm7 G7 | C6/9

In jazz, the association between the ii–V motion and the arrival by fifth is so strong that the ii–V can be perceived even when its resolution is avoided or redirected.

7. Chain of dominants

A series of dominants produces strong movement by fifths.

E7 – A7 – D7 – G7 – CB7 – E7 – A7 – D7 – G7 – C

It is a central device in samba, choro, jazz, blues, gospel and tonal popular music. The chain does not need to occupy many bars: two consecutive dominants can already intensify an arrival.

8. Tritone substitution

A dominant can be swapped for another one a tritone away.

G7 → Db7

Guide tones:

G7: B – FDb7: Cb – F

The C flat of Db7 is enharmonically equivalent to B. So the two chords share the tritone formed by the third and the seventh.

Original Dm7 – G7 – C7M → with the substitution Dm7 – Db7 – C7M, with the bass descending D – Db – C. It is one of the classic techniques for altering progressions in jazz.

Check the melody: over G7 the note D is the fifth; over Db7, D becomes the b9. The substitution can work, but the tension changes considerably.

Type Dm7 G7 C7M, open the by-technique view and compare G7 with its tritone substitution. Play both chords and notice how each reaches C7M by a different path; then open the positions and look for voicings in which the inner notes move by a semitone.

9. Modal interchange

Modal interchange uses chords from a parallel mode. In C major, it is common to import chords from C minor:

Cm Dm7(b5) Eb7M Fm Ab7M Bb

Mixing the parallel major and minor changes qualities and colors that do not belong to the main scale.

The minor IV: C – F – Fm – C, with the inner movement A – Ab – G. Expanded version:

C7M – C7 – F7M – Fm6 – C/G – G7 – C

bVII: C – Bb – F – C, frequent in rock, folk, modal pop and cinematic music.

bVI–bVII–I: Ab – Bb – C, a broad arrival without using the traditional dominant.

In modal pop and rock progressions, chords like bVII, bVI and IV can play roles that do not correspond exactly to the classic tonal functions. That is why you should not automatically turn every modal progression into a ii–V–I.

10. Backdoor dominant

In C: Fm7 – Bb7 – C7M. Possible inner movements:

Ab → GDb → CF → EBb → B or A

The arrival happens through the so-called "back door", using a region borrowed from the parallel minor. Variations:

Fm6 – Bb7(9) – C6/9Dm7(b5) – Bb7 – C7MAb7M – Bb7 – C7M

11. Neapolitan chord

The Neapolitan is built on the lowered second degree. In C:

Db/F – G7 – C

In tonal language it usually plays a mostly preparatory function. In popular arrangements it can be used more freely:

C – Db7M – G7 – CDm7 – Db7 – C

The second example can also be interpreted as a tritone substitution, depending on the context and the quality of the chord.

12. Approach diminished chords

A diminished chord can approach the target chromatically.

C – C#°7 – Dm7Dm7 – D#°7 – Em7F – F#°7 – GG – G#°7 – Am

The diminished chord can also represent a dominant with the root omitted.

B°7: B – D – F – AbG7(b9): G – B – D – F – Ab

13. Common-tone diminished

Not every diminished chord is a dominant.

C6 – C°7 – C6

The root stays, while the other notes move chromatically. This kind of chord works as ornamentation or prolongation, and not necessarily as preparation for a new key.

14. Line cliché

One voice moves chromatically while the chord stays recognizable. In A minor:

Am – Am(7M) – Am7 – Am6Inner line: A – G# – G – F#

Continuation:

Am – Am(7M) – Am7 – D7/F# – F7M – E7

In C major:

C – C(#5) – C6 – C7 – FLine: G – G# – A – Bb – A

15. Descending chromatic bass

One of the most effective ways to create direction is to write the bass first.

C7M – G/B – C7/Bb – F/A – Fm/Ab – C/G – G7Bass: C – B – Bb – A – Ab – G

The sequence combines inversions, a secondary dominant, modal interchange, chromaticism and cadential preparation.

16. Pedal tone

One note stays while the chords move.

Dominant pedal: C/G – Dm/G – F/G – G7 – CTonic pedal: C – Dm/C – Bb/C – F/CUpper pedal (E): C7M – Am7 – F7M – Dm9 – A7 – C/E

The pedal creates unity and allows bolder harmonic changes without completely losing the center.

17. Suspended chords

A dominant chord can delay its third.

G7sus4 → G7 → CF/G → G7 → C

The suspension creates tension without immediately presenting the full tritone of the dominant. It can also stay unresolved:

C – Bb/C – F/C – C

In that case, the sonority moves closer to a modal or pedal-based organization.

18. Upper structures

A simple triad can represent the tensions of a larger chord. Over G7:

basic structure: B – FA triad: A – C# – Eresult: G13(#11)

The notes of the A triad represent 9, #11 and 13. Over an altered dominant, other triads can represent b9, #9, b13 and other tensions. This technique is especially useful on four-string instruments, because it lets you suggest complex chords without playing all the notes.

19. Hybrid chords

A triad can be placed over a different bass.

F/G → G7sus4 or G11A/B → B7sus4 or B11D/C → color of C7M with 9, #11 and 13

The final interpretation depends on the other notes present in the arrangement.

20. Turnaround

A turnaround is a sequence that creates a return to the tonic.

Basic: C – Am – Dm – G7With secondary dominant: C – A7 – Dm – G7iii–VI–ii–V: Em7 – A7 – Dm7 – G7Tritone substitution: C7M – Eb7 – Dm7 – Db7

21. Cycle of major thirds

An advanced sequence can divide the octave into centers separated by major thirds.

C7M – Eb7 – Ab7M – B7 – E7M – G7 – C7M

The technique became associated with John Coltrane's language and demands great attention to the melody. It is not a matter of simply inserting many dominants: the movement must be articulated so that each new center is perceived, even if only briefly.

22. Negative harmony

Negative harmony reflects notes and chords around a tonal axis. It can produce transformations such as:

C → CmF → GmG7 → Fm6

The device should be understood as an experimental tool for generating possibilities. A mathematically coherent transformation does not guarantee compatibility with the melody, stylistic coherence, good voice leading or a convincing musical result. That is why this technique appears labeled as experimental, kept separate from the more established transformations.

A complete example: reharmonizing C – G – Am – F

Original progression: C – G – Am – F.

Version 1: enrichment

Cadd9 – G – Am7 – Fadd9

It keeps almost all of the original identity.

Version 2: bass movement

C – G/B – Am – Am/G – F – C/E – Dm7 – G7

It creates a descending line.

Version 3: secondary dominant

C – E7 – Am – C7 – F – D7 – G

It tonicizes Am, F and G.

Version 4: MPB and bossa language

C6/9 | Bm7(b5) E7(b9) | Am7 A7(b13) | Dm9 G13

It creates preparation, tension and movement by fifths.

Version 5: modal interchange

C7M – G/B – Am7 – Fm6

The minor IV changes the color of the arrival.

Version 6: jazz with tritone substitution

C7M | Bm7(b5) Bb7 | Am7 Ab7 | Gm7 Gb7 | F7M

The bass takes on strong chromaticism.

Version 7: modal

Cadd9 – D/C – Bb/C – F/C

The note C works as a pedal.

Version 8: cinematic

C7M – Eb7M – Ab7M – G7sus4

The coherence comes more from the relationships of color and voice leading than from a single diatonic scale.

Type C G Am F. Compare the Subtle and Medium palettes; then move on to Bold. Do not pick the option with the most complex chord symbol — assess which one fits the melody, which one keeps a good bass line, which one has comfortable positions and which one belongs to the style of the song.

How to adapt reharmonization to each instrument

The same chord symbol does not produce the same result on the four instruments: register, string count and tuning change the weight of the bass, the order of the voices and what can be omitted. Below is the adaptation for your instrument — switch in the bar above to compare.

Acoustic guitar

Because it brings together bass, harmony and melody, the chord symbol has to turn into a voicing that works across the six strings. A useful order of priorities is:

  1. melody;
  2. bass;
  3. third;
  4. seventh;
  5. characteristic tension;
  6. fifth, when needed.

Open strings — in E, E – Aadd9/E – Bsus4/E – E7M: the E and B strings can keep ringing as roots, fifths, ninths, pedals or common notes.

Chord melody — the highest note of the chord should match the melody. For the melody E – F – G – A:

C7M/E – Dm7/F – Em7/G – F7M/A

It is not enough to find any position of C7M: you need to find one whose top note is E. Drop 2 voicings help spread four-note chords across the fretboard, creating more open shapes and smoother connections.

Electric guitar

In an ensemble, the electric guitar often does not need to play the root, the fifth, six notes or all the extensions. Shell voicings for Dm7 – G7 – C7M:

Dm7: F – CG7: F – BC7M: E – B

With tensions:

Dm9: F – C – EG13: F – B – EC7M(9): E – B – D

With the bass played by another instrument, the electric guitar can play small high structures, avoiding competition with the bass, piano, acoustic guitar and voice. With distortion, the greater the saturation, the more important it is to reduce close intervals in the low register, doublings and the number of notes: two or three well-chosen notes communicate the harmony better than a six-note chord.

Cavaquinho

Among the tunings found in Brazil are:

Traditional: D – G – B – DNatural: D – G – B – EIn fifths: G – D – A – E

In the traditional tuning, the strings form a G major chord in second inversion. Because it occupies a mid-high region, the lowest note of the shape does not have to work as the structural bass — that function can be left to the seven-string guitar, the double bass, the electric bass or the piano.

The specific literature on the cavaquinho points out that its inversions can be understood mainly as distributions and doublings, and that triads can be played on three strings, leaving a finger free to move a melodic note. With the bass on D and an A major triad (A – C# – E) on the cavaquinho, the overlap can produce Dm(7M/9) — the use of polychords and upper-register tensions described in Pedro Cantalice's research.

Open strings increase resonance, make position changes easier, work as a pedal and create campanella — the effect of letting the notes of a passage keep ringing over one another. In samba and pagode, the identity of the harmony also depends on anticipation, short duration, muting and the direction of the pick stroke: a reharmonization for cavaquinho is not complete when it presents only the chord symbol.

Ukulele

The common tuning is G – C – E – A. In the high-G tuning, the G string is tuned in the high register, making it a reentrant tuning. This directly affects inversions, slash chords, the real order of the voices, the layout of the melody and the sense of openness.

A shape that visually starts on the G string does not mean G will be the lowest note. To write C/E, E must actually be heard in the bass — whether from the ukulele itself in low-G or from another instrument in the arrangement. The ukulele suits arrangements in which melody and chords appear at the same time; the literature on virtuoso performance identifies chord melody as an important approach to solo ukulele.

A complete study workflow in the app

  1. Type the progression into Reharmonize — for example C G Am F, separating the chords with spaces or commas.
  2. Compare levels and techniques — notice which chord was substituted, which scale degree appeared, which technique was used and which function was preserved or changed.
  3. Listen to the chords — compare the color of the original chord with the suggestion.
  4. Open the positions on the fretboard — check inversions, top notes, hand shifts, open strings, omissions and register variations.
  5. Consult the Circle of Fifths — use the harmonic field to confirm scale degrees, diatonic chords, secondary dominants and relationships with the key.

Progressive study plan

  1. Inversions — reharmonize C – G – Am – F using only inverted basses.
  2. Diatonic substitutions — create three versions using only notes from C major.
  3. Secondary dominants — tonicize Dm, Em, F, G and Am.
  4. ii–V — prepare each of the previous chords with its related ii–V.
  5. Modal interchange — use iv, bVI, bVII and bII.
  6. Chromaticism — create a descending bass, a line cliché, diminished chords and tritone substitutions.
  7. Voicings — play the same sequence with full chords, with shells, with drop 2, with upper triads and without the root.
  8. Four instruments — adapt the same version to all four instruments: solo, in an ensemble, with an external bass and as chord melody.
  9. Musical application — choose a real song, preserve its melody and produce three versions: conservative, intermediate and radical.
