Jazz four-to-the-bar (ukulele)
Sound summary
Jazz is played with a chord strum — 4/4, straight (even subdivisions) — for the ukulele: the groove drives the chord (A) with down-strokes. It sounds like this: A↓ A↓ A↓ A↓.
How to count it
The meter is 4/4: 4 beats per bar, counted in one strum per beat. Speak the count: 1 2 3 4. Foot on the beat, follow the grid above — each cell is one beat.
The rhythm grid
A = chord · ↓ down-stroke
The ↓/↑ direction follows the bowed-string arcada convention (ᴨ down, V up; Ribeiro 2017).
How to play it
Right hand
Strum the chord (A) all down (↓). The trick is regularity — same force, same gap between one stroke and the next.
Left hand
The left hand gives the harmony: hold the whole shape clean from start to finish, leaving the right hand to the rhythm. Make the change on the last beat, the hand already heading to the next chord.
Example in G7
Hold a G7G7G7G7 and apply the whole pattern to it — every hit lands on the same chord. That’s how you take the groove into any song: change only the left hand, the right hand’s rhythm stays the same. Hear the example below.
Common mistakes
- Losing the pulse. The time has to stay firm start to finish — count along and don’t let the pattern speed up or drag by accident.
Guided practice
- Down-strokes only. Strum the chord on every down-stroke (↓), no up-stroke yet.
- Even the strokes out. Focus on keeping every down-stroke the same force and spacing.
- Take it up on the metronome. Start slow, keep the pattern clean, and add a few BPM at a time.
You’ve got the theory; now the time has to enter the body. Play along with the audio, follow the count and raise the metronome bit by bit until every stroke lands in its place without rushing — Chord & Fret runs that drill with an adjustable tempo.

With the strum steady, take it to actual Jazz progressions: rhythm, chord changes and voice-leading in one exercise. That’s the Progressions by Rhythm feature in Chord & Fret.
Train with progressions →Understanding the groove is the first step; the full practice — repetition, metronome, audio, progressions and review — happens in Chord & Fret. There this pattern stays saved in your study, to revisit later, play offline and track your progress.
