Bossa nova (chord anticipated every bar)
Sound summary
For the guitar, Bossa nova uses a bass-and-chord figure, in 2/4 straight (even subdivisions): it alternates thumb bass (B) and chord (A), one answering the other. In practice it sounds: B — A — B A — A.
How to count it
There are 2 beats per bar (2/4), split into sixteenth-notes (four per beat). Say the beats: 1 e & a, 2 e & a. Keep the beat with your foot and follow the grid: each box is one subdivision.

The thumb bass and the i-m-a block follow the two-voice violão notation (Silva & Madeira 2021).
How to play it
Right hand
Bass and chord take turns: the bass (B) on the thumb first, then the chord (A) answering — always in that order, never colliding. It is a pinch: the thumb stays on the bass strings and i-m-a pull the three treble strings together — never sweep across all the strings. On the rests the hand stays put: the fingers hover over the strings, ready for the next block.
Left hand
Keep the chord well pressed through the whole pattern — the left hand rules pitch, the right rules the bar. Only release the shape at the end of the bar, moving the hand ahead to the next one.
Example in Cmaj7
Take a Cmaj7Cmaj7Cmaj7Cmaj7: the bass (B) is the low G, and the Cmaj7 chord (A) answers next. Play it slowly, following the diagram and the sound.
Common mistakes
- Bass and chord landing together. The bass (B) comes first; the chord (A) answers after. If they collide the groove disappears — separate the two hands in time.
- Rushing. Fast subdivisions are easy to run. Start slow with the metronome and only speed up once the pattern is clean.
- Freezing the arm on a rest. It should keep going in the air, off the strings, and land on the next hit — the continuous motion is what holds the time.
Guided practice
- Start from the low end. Play just the B with the thumb, slow, watching each one land in place.
- Isolate the chord. Drop the bass and play only the A hits, feeling where they answer.
- Add the two voices. Bass then chord, always in that order, slow, until it plays itself.
- Close with the metronome. Go slow first and raise the BPM only once the pattern comes out clean.
