Greek modes: understand each color by its sound on ukulele

On a ukulele in G-C-E-A with a reentrant G, the fourth string is high-pitched — there is no true bass line, and the lowest note on the instrument is the C of the third string. That turns mode study upside down: the modal hierarchy has to be built with repetition and with the top voice, not with a sustained low note.

Reentrant tuning changes the strategy

Reentrant means the strings do not run from low to high: the fourth string (G) sounds above the third (C). The practical consequence: the visual order of the strings does not match the order of pitches, and what looks like a bass note in the diagram may be a high note in the air. For modes, that means the pedal — the repeated note that sustains the center — must be chosen by actual sound. The open C string, the lowest on the instrument, is the natural pedal for the modes of C; the high G string works as an inverted pedal, ringing above the phrases.

C is the ukulele's laboratory tonic

With the open third string pulsing as the center, compare three colors while keeping everything else the same: C Ionian (with B and F natural), C Mixolydian (swap B for Bb) and C Lydian (swap F for F#). One note of difference at a time, always placed on the first string to stay in the spotlight. It is the cheapest modal laboratory there is — three modes, one open string, two moving notes.

The campanella technique — letting neighboring melody notes ring on different strings, overlapping like little bells — is tailor-made for modes: the characteristic note keeps ringing over the tonic instead of being cut off by a position shift. In solo arranging and chord melody, it is what makes sustaining the color possible with so few strings.

Where modes show up in the repertoire

In vocal accompaniment for pop and folk, Ionian and Aeolian dominate — and that is fine. Modes come in as seasoning: a Dorian interlude lends gravity to a minor song without darkening it; a Mixolydian vamp loosens up an intro; Lydian, with its floating augmented fourth, is almost a suspension effect in solo instrumental arrangements.

Do I need to switch to low-G to study modes?

No. Standard reentrant tuning handles it with the right strategy: a repeated pedal on the C string and the characteristic note in the top voice. A low fourth string (low-G) adds a supporting register, but it is an arranging option, not a study prerequisite.

Does reentrant tuning get in the way of modal music?

It changes the method, not the result. You trade the low drone for rhythmic repetition of the tonic and gain campanella in return — which keeps the characteristic note hanging in the air in a way few instruments can.
