Arpeggios: how they are built, applied, and practiced on ukulele
On the ukulele tuned G–C–E–A, the fourth string is high — the so-called reentrant high G — and that turns the arpeggio upside down: the physical order of the strings does not match the order of the pitches. Used well, that quirk is the instrument's greatest advantage for arpeggios.

Running across the strings in order does not produce a line from low to high, but a back-and-forth of nearby pitches — a shimmering, bell-like cascade that no technical adjustment removes, because it is born from the tuning itself. The range is compact: the four open strings live within a single octave. That is why the ukulele's arpeggio shines in the mid-to-high register and should not try to imitate a bass that is not there.
Campanella: the house technique
Campanella means playing consecutive notes on different strings, letting them all ring over one another — each sound sustains into the next, like bells. Reentrant tuning seems made for it: notes that are neighbors in pitch fall on separate strings, and the melody comes out connected with no effort. The idea comes from old plucked-string traditions and was adapted to the ukulele a few decades ago, becoming the instrument's trademark in solo arrangements.
Role in the arrangement and styles
In vocal accompaniment, light arpeggios replace the strum in ballads and delicate passages, without competing with the voice. In chord melody, the highest note of each shape carries the melody while the rest fill in the harmony. In Hawaiian music and folk, repetitive fingerpicking patterns create the characteristic sway. In every case, the top voice rules: choose the chord shape for the note you want to hear singing.
Common mistakes on the ukulele
- Treating the fourth string as low: starting the arpeggio there expecting a bass that does not exist — in high-G, it is one of the highest notes.
- Copying patterns designed for instruments with low strings: the fingering technically works, but the sound comes out different; order by the real pitches.
- Cutting the resonance short: in the high register, notes that are too short sound thin; let things ring whenever the harmony allows.
- Trusting only your eyes: with reentrant tuning, inversions and apparent bass notes deceive; the final reference is the ear, not the position on the neck.
Is it worth switching to low-G to improve arpeggios?
It depends on the goal. Low-G — the fourth string tuned an octave down — offers a continuous low line and widens the range, but it erases the reentrant sparkle and much of the campanella effect. Plenty of players keep one instrument in each tuning for exactly that reason.
How do I find the real pitch order in a chord?
Play the notes slowly, one by one, singing each of them; then try to reorder them from lowest to highest by ear alone. That simple exercise trains exactly the skill reentrant tuning demands from anyone who arpeggiates.
